Branded links vs generic links: what actually changes

Custom domains change trust, click-through, deliverability and analytics ownership. Here is what to expect and what to ignore.

Trust is the whole mechanism

A generic short link hides its destination behind a domain shared with every other user of that platform — including spammers. A branded link puts your name in the URL. Readers make a snap judgment about whether a link is safe, and the domain is almost the only evidence they have.

The click-through effect is real but not magic

Vendors publish click-through improvements from branded links ranging from modest to spectacular. Treat the big numbers sceptically: they usually compare very different campaigns. What is consistent across studies is the direction — branded beats generic — and the size depends heavily on how well-known your brand already is.

Deliverability and filtering

Some email and chat filters treat well-known shortener domains as a risk signal because so much abuse flows through them. A domain you control, with a clean reputation and proper SSL, avoids being lumped in with everyone else.

You own the redirect

If the shortener disappears, generic links die. If you own the domain, you can repoint DNS at another provider and keep every link alive. This is the single strongest operational argument for branded links, and it costs about the price of a domain per year.

What does not change

A branded domain does not improve your SEO directly, does not pass link equity to your site in a meaningful way, and does not make a bad landing page convert. It changes the moment of the click, not what happens after.

Choosing a short domain

Short beats clever. Prefer a subdomain of a domain you already own — go.brand.com, ms.brand.com — because it inherits your existing recognition and needs no new registration. If you buy a dedicated domain, keep it under about twelve characters and avoid hyphens and homoglyph-prone spellings.
