Link retargeting: building audiences from clicks on other people's content

Attach a pixel to a short link and every click becomes an audience member — with real limits worth knowing.

How it works

When a short link carries a retargeting pixel, the redirect fires the pixel before sending the visitor on. The visitor enters your ad platform audience even though the destination is not your site.

Why it is useful

Curating industry content is a real content strategy. Retargeting turns that audience-building into something measurable: people who clicked your curated links are a warm audience you can reach later.

In the EU and UK, dropping a tracking pixel needs consent, and a redirect gives you no opportunity to ask. Many teams limit link retargeting to regions where the rules allow it, or skip it entirely. Take advice rather than assuming.

Browser reality

Safari and Firefox block most third-party tracking by default, and iOS restricts cross-site tracking heavily. Expect audience sizes far below click counts, especially on mobile.

Server-side is more reliable

Forwarding the event server-side to a conversions API rather than firing a browser pixel survives blockers and gives you cleaner data — at the cost of setup effort.

Set expectations before you build it

Link retargeting was more powerful five years ago than it is now. It still works, but if someone is promising you audience sizes that match your click counts, they are describing a world that no longer exists.
