Link strategy for newsletters that you can actually measure

Email platforms already wrap your links. Here is how to add short links without double-counting or breaking anything.

Understand what your email platform already does

Most email tools rewrite every link in a campaign to their own click-tracking domain so they can report click rates. That means your short link becomes the destination of their tracker, not the first hop. This is fine, but it explains why your platform's click count and the email tool's click count will never match: they are counting at different points, with different bot filtering.

Decide which number is the source of truth per question

Use the email platform's clicks for per-recipient behaviour: who clicked, click-to-open rate, segmentation for follow-up. Use the short link's clicks for cross-channel comparison, because the same link measured the same way appears in social and print reports too. Trying to reconcile them precisely is a waste of an afternoon.

The header image, the first text link and the footer button all pointing to the same short link tells you nothing about layout. Give each placement its own utm_content value. Over ten sends this produces a reliable picture of where in the newsletter people actually click, which is worth more than any individual campaign result.

Avoid stacking redirects unnecessarily

Email tracker plus short link plus a landing page locale redirect is three hops before anything renders. On a slow mobile connection this is visible. If the email tool already tracks clicks, consider whether the short link is adding anything for that specific send — it usually is, for cross-channel comparability and editability, but it is worth asking.

Plain-text versions, links you want to be able to fix after sending, links reused across email and social, and links inside transactional messages that bypass the marketing platform. Those are the cases where the editable destination earns its place.

Watch out for security scanners

Corporate email gateways fetch every link in a message to check it, sometimes multiple times per recipient. That inflates raw clicks, particularly for business audiences, and it can trigger single-use links or consume limited offers. If your list is business-heavy, look at whether your platform separates bot traffic, and never use one-time-use links in email without testing.

Your unsubscribe alternative, preference centre, latest issue archive and referral page appear in every send. Give them permanent short links and reuse them. When the underlying URL changes, you edit one destination instead of every template.

Test on the real client mix

Send a seed copy to accounts on the three or four clients your audience actually uses and click through on a phone. In-app browsers and privacy proxies handle redirects and parameters differently, and this is the only reliable way to find out which of them drops your UTMs.
