Links for podcasts and audio: designing for the ear

A spoken link has to be understood once, at speed, without spelling. That constrains almost every choice.

A host reads a URL aloud in about two seconds. Anything requiring spelling — hyphens, digits, unusual words — breaks the flow and loses the listener. The target is a short domain plus one common word: brand.co/show, brand.co/deal. If you cannot say it naturally in conversation, it is the wrong link.

Give every show its own slug

Attribution in audio is otherwise nearly impossible. One slug per podcast, or per host, is the entire measurement system. brand.co/showname is memorable, tells you exactly where the listener came from, and costs nothing to mint. Avoid promo codes as a substitute: they measure purchases, not interest, and they miss everyone who clicked but did not buy.

Do not use vanity codes that overlap with words

A slug that sounds like a common word will be typed as that word by half the audience. If the show is called "Focus", brand.co/focus is fine. If it is "Phocus", it is not — you will lose everyone who spells what they heard.

Listeners split between typing what they heard and tapping the show notes. Use the same memorable slug on air and a second link in the notes, or the same link with a distinguishing content parameter. Comparing the two tells you how much of your audio audience is actually reading show notes, which is useful for deciding where to put your effort.

Expect a long tail and plan for it

Podcast episodes are downloaded for years. A link mentioned in episode 40 will still receive clicks when you are on episode 300. That means the slug must be permanent and the destination must be maintained. When a promotion ends, repoint the slug to a general page rather than letting it die, because the episode cannot be edited.

Read the analytics with the release schedule in mind

Audio clicks arrive in a long smear, not a spike, because people listen days after release and often cannot act immediately. Judging a podcast placement on the first 48 hours will systematically undervalue it. Give it at least two weeks before you compare it with anything.

Have someone who has not seen the link listen to the host say it and then type what they heard. Whatever they type is what your audience will type. If it is not your slug, either change the slug or register the misheard variant as a second link pointing to the same place.
