WhatsApp click-to-chat links: the practical guide
Pre-filled messages, short branded wrappers, and how to actually count how many conversations a campaign started.

The URL format
A click-to-chat link is https://wa.me/<number in international format, digits only, no plus or spaces> with an optional ?text= parameter carrying a URL-encoded pre-filled message. No prior contact save is needed on either side.
Pre-fill the first message
A pre-filled message like "Hi, I saw the Diwali offer and want details" does two things: it lowers the effort of starting a conversation, and it tells your team which campaign produced the lead. Vary the text per placement and you have attribution built into the conversation itself.
Wrap it in a branded short link
wa.me links are long, ugly and unmeasurable. Wrapping them in a branded short link gives you a clean printable URL, a click count, geography, and the ability to change the destination number without reprinting anything.
Where this wins
In markets where WhatsApp is the default channel — India, Brazil, Indonesia, much of the Middle East — a chat link converts far better than a contact form. It is particularly strong on printed material, where a QR code pointing at a chat link turns a poster into a conversation.
Business accounts and catalogues
A WhatsApp Business profile lets you attach a catalogue, set away messages and use quick replies. If chat links are a real channel for you, the business tier is worth the setup — the free personal experience does not scale past a few conversations a day.
Measuring the funnel
Clicks tell you interest; conversations tell you intent. Report the click on the short link and the reply rate in WhatsApp side by side, and vary only the pre-filled text between placements so the comparison is fair.
